"We talked about the war. Again, there was a Russian-German agreement that it is absurd. We differed a little in the possible reasons for it, Dima proposed economic interests of the US, and I disagreed. I believe the US could have everything that they can gain by a war much cheapre by trade and/or bribing..."
"Interesting aspect was brought into the discussion by Alexey who compared the military intervention of the US in Iraq to the NATO intervention in Serbia before and wondered why Germany disagrees with Iraq but agreed to the Serbia action. The Serbia actions were indeed a crucial political decision of post-war Germany - it was the first time Germany got engaged in a military action outside its own territory, and it was a big issue everywhere at that time. Ironically, the decision was made by our green - social democrat government and not by the conservatives who are much more likely to pursue such actions. In my viwe these two affairs are not too similar although I can see Alexey's point. The main difference is that at least the common opinion in Germany was that the Serbia war took place to end an existing (civil) war (against the Albanians), and the line of discussion here was that no action would mean to become guilty with respect to allowing Albanian genocide. This was of course immediately put into context with the holocaust, and was used as an imperative to act, if necessary with violence. This time in Iraq there was no war to end and no people to save. How you look at it, I cannot find even a slight justification for military action."
" In my view it constitutes the end of common ethical and moral values of the Western world. The US betrayall ideals they claim to secure. It's the second time in my life I experinece something I would have thought to be impossible to happen. The first was the breakdown of Communism and odf the Soviet Union. I was quite sure before that in Europe the political situation was absolutely stable, and that wars and changing borders wre only taking place in the Third world. And then, they changed so quickly. And now, treating the Al Qaida prisoners in Cuba literally like dogs and starting this absurd war is for me as shocking as the breakdown of the Soviet Union. Good thing for me personally is that I can view it from one of the safest places you could imagine, so there is no concern about me personally. But I am concerned about the general poltical future, and I am afraid that this war is more than just an unfortunate misjudgement by some incapable politicians."
